Ch 15: Getting help

Tools available to defend home computers have become diverse and complicated.
Before one purchases security products understand which components are crucial.

Security essentials:
* patches
*anti virus
*anti-adware/spyware
*firewall protection
*backup software

Additional Niceties:
*SPAM blocking
*SPIM blocking: instant message version of spam
*Anti fraud, privacy, identity protection

Why buy bundles:
*Save money
* security has a licence
*all products work together

Back up products:
*CD drive
*USB drive
back up files need to be fairly recent

Removal tools for clean up may be necessary
By the new version of the software make sure to update it.
Keep security awareness current.
*Common sense media
*Cyber smart
*Family online safety institute
are a few sites to use to protect your computer.

Reflection

There are many ways that you could use this in the classroom. Anywhere from attendance to math, reading and writing. I really think using the magic math where the you drag the math problems to another recolored page and it gives you the answer! I think kids would be amazed by this. Anything to make learning more fun is going to engage the students.

Chapter 1 Protect Your Turff

Key Vocabulary:
* Netizen: a citizen of cyberspace any person using internet to participate in online social communities.

* Malware: programing code designed to harm a computer or the data.
Some: Malware villians include:
-viruses
-worms
-trojans
-bot armies
-key stroke loggers
-spyware
-adware
-scareware
-randsome ware

* Security hole: flaw in the way program is written or makes the computer vulnerable to attack by the malware villians.

* Security patch: A fix to a program to close a known security hole.

Key Learning:
The internet has been around sense the 70's and has grown expinationally. 90% of american teens have access to internet in their homes. Which means there are more chances of down loads that has villians wanting to crash the computers. Not only can down loading things have the potencial for dangers, there is the posiblity that online preditors can inflitrate past your "secure" information, putting your fincial, personal, and even your children at risk.
How do people protect themselves? first informing their children what is appropriate to down load and what sites are ok to be on. Also buying a new computer doesn't mean that the computer is safe! It is important to get the proper security software. Most of the time people will get the security holes because they are dealing with an uneducated programmer and there are programming mistakes in general.

Application:
This is good information for children to know, because a lot of the time kids just want to download something and because it says free does't mean it is! This is good information in general for anyone, I was unware about the new computers not having good security. So I think that all people could benefit from this information on how to protect the information people put on computers.

Students could use this site to create a avatar character that could be a character from a story that they are reading. Teachers could help studnets create blogs and have the students blog "in character" about thoughts and feeling this particular character might think. The grade level would could be lower grade if you are creating an avatar, but I think the higher grades could make the blog and use it to develop their character, or a character from a story. I put the link above. The risks are it is a regualr blog and if not monitored it could be miss used!

This web site could be used if you want your students to create pictures to go with a story. It could be used if you want students to make up their own story. I put the link on the page, however I don't think my example that I made came up. This i think should be used in the upper grades, it is a bit complicated to create the comic strip. Some of the cartoons are dressed inapprpriately and you never know what kind of clip art there will be either. This is also another site that needs you to sign up with an email.

This could be a page that the teacher builds to ask the students questions, they all could respond on this one page using the post it notes. I have a link above to my page that I created. I think any grade level could post to this site, creating one would be a different story. It was a little confusing on how to get everything started. The risk is students have the ablity to say that their blog could be read by everyone, if you don't change it to private, a lot of people could post on your blog! You have to have an email adress to create a page, but if you want your students to just post to your page you can.

A wordle is a 2.0 tool that be used in many different crative ways by teacher. Word find, sight words, categorizing things are a few ways teachers could use this tool. Click the link about where I have an example using names in a class. It really could be used for any grade level! This site seems simple and easy and most importantly safe to use! The teacher might want to play with this program before letting the students go and use this site. If you want to change your own color you have to go to the cutimize color in the color tab.

My Ahh Haa

What I took away from this article is that if we are going to help students become productive members of society we have to realize where our society is. It is a technological society. Students need role models of what is right and wrong and how to better advance them in this world. I thought it was funny when he talked about people thinking kids are technology savvy, and he indicates that children aren't born with the knowledge about technology, but they pick up the basics quickly. We need to learn assess critical pieces for the students providing them with the good and bad information that they decipher.
The number one standard on nets for teachers is to facilitate adn inspire studnet learning and creativity, indicating that we as teacher need to promote, support, MODEL, innovative thinking and inventinveness. It also states that we need to MODEL digital-age-work and learning. As teachers we need to be up to date with education yes, but with the world in which we live. We live in a technological word and we would be hindering our students if we don't incorperate technology into our classroom curiculum.

Lets Make a Match

Lets make a match, is on my student activity page, under netsmart kids. This is a site that kids can choose a fun game. The game Lets Make a Match is a fun memory game for the students. It seems like a fun game, but working on memory and cognition is an important skill for these little ones to develop. This would be a great site for parents to allow their children a time for productive play, maybe a substitute for video games!

Bang on the time

Bang on the time is a fun way to practice your knowledge about time. It gives you a time, like twenty until three, you have to wait until the clock reaches that time and hit the bang that time button. If you get it right you get bonus points, if it's close you still get points. The parent or teacher can set the pace the clock moves, so if their child is really fast they can set the clock faster for accuracy. Parents could work with their students at home if they are having truouble telling time, this would be a fun way for the student to practice.

Tina's Make Believe

This is a good link for aiding in the concept of real vs fantasy. The game gives scenarios to the student and has them determine if they are real or make believe. Parents could easily do this with their child if they wanted to help them further in understanding this concept.
